ObjectivesThe Commission on Gender and Geography of the International Geographical Union is an active group with about 500 members from 60 different countries in all parts of the world. The Commission has an active program in many countries, organising one or two meetings each year and expanding its intellectual network through academic publications, newsletters and the website. The objectives of the commission are:
The central theme of the Commission on Gender and Geography in the period between 2008-2012 is: 'Gendered Perspectives: Connecting Across Difference'. This theme allows the Commission members to focus on gendered differences and the theoretical and practical meanings and implications of the connections that can be made to bridge such differences. We intend to explore this theme on various scales and contents: from international and global perspectives, to a regional and local scale and on the individual scale. Gendered Perspectives : Connecting Across Difference allows the Commission members to discuss multiple identities and experiences of difference, connecting gender with culture, ethnicity and nationality, class and economic status and other recurring forms of difference such as age and ability/disability and the ways such multiple identities reflect situations of ‘connection across difference'.
